So my son is playing in his fourth grade basketball tournament. They're up by three points. There's ten seconds to go. All they have to do is inbound the ball, run out the clock, and it's over. Of course, my son gets the ball passed inbounds to him and what does he do? He chucks up a three-pointer. What are you doing?! Why would you do that? And, of course, he gets fouled and makes the shot. The crowd goes completely wild. And what does my son do? Only the most current, cool, and universal showboating. He dabs, right there in the middle of the court. Ugh. As I watch this whole thing go down, I had three thoughts come to my mind. Number one, "Why would you take that shot?" And number two, "Way to go buddy! Awesome shot!" And number three, "Don't you ever show off like that again on the court." But that's what what's cool these days, isn't it? That's what all the kids see. That's what we all see. You score a touchdown, you do a touchdown dance. You swish the three-pointer, you show it off in someone's face. You make a YouTube video, you become an instant online celebrity. You take a selfie with Kardashian lips and you show how attractive you are, at least I'm told that's attractive. Our world is filled with showboating and showing off and, and self-centered selfishness. But you know, it's always been that way. And so that's why the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians chapter 2, "Your attitude should be . . ." not like an elite athlete, not like a Kardashian, thankfully, ". . .the same as that of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). And then he goes on to explain what that means. Read Philippians chapter 2 sometime. It's one of the most important chapters in the entire Bible because it so clearly explains who Jesus is and what he did. It says that Jesus is in very nature true God. And yet he didn't consider that something to be put on display, or shown off, or used to his advantage. Instead, Jesus made himself nothing, taking on the very nature of a servant, even humbly becoming obedient to death on a cross for us. Paul tells us that's what Christian living is all about, living a humble life of love. What kinds of ways can you show that love? If someone cuts you off on the freeway, don't give them that special sign language telling them what you think about it. Just wave, and smile, and let them go. Don't cut in line in front of someone at the grocery store. Let them go first. Don't keep talking about yourself and bragging. Or bragging about your children and how they made special three-pointers at grade school basketball games. Ask someone else how they're doing, and what their life is like. That is showing humble love. That is having an attitude like Jesus. Would you like to share the joy of what God has done for us? We'd love for you to be a Grace Partner, to be a regular donor.
