When I was in grade school I had, what I thought at the time, was the coolest t-shirt in the world. It had a big basketball on it and underneath it it said, "Basketball is life. The rest is just details." Well, the shirt caught on and became extremely popular. So soon you started seeing everything. Football is life. Cheerleading is life. The rest is just details. There was a shirt for everything. Then came the endorsements and it was Duke basketball, or Alabama football, or WWF wrestling is life and the rest is just details. It got a little absurd after a while but the point of the shirt, very clear. This one singular thing in my life is more important than anything else. If you had one of those shirts today, what do you think your shirt would say? My big house in my great neighborhood is life. My job is my life. My retirement is life. My kids are my life. The rest is just details. There are so many things that grab on to our attention, that make us lose focus on what really matters the most in life. Well, the apostle Paul helps us with that today, in joyful Christian living. In Philippians chapter 4 he helps us to regain proper perspective for life. Paul had so many accomplishments and accolades. He was the cream of the crop, the best of the best for being a Jew, and his training and his knowledge in his background. And yet he says this,"I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus Christ my Lord. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ" (Philippians 3:8). That word for rubbish is so fascinating. In the Greek culture that word rubbish meant garbage, or refuse, or even manure, or feces. So, essentially Paul is saying, perhaps with a smile on his face, everything in life is one big, steaming pile of . . . garbage compared to the greatness of knowing Jesus Christ our Lord. Think carefully about your life. What is interfering with your relationship with Jesus? What might be causing you to lose focus? Remember that in joyful Christian living, God gives us so many great blessings. But Jesus is life and the rest is just details. Have you had to refocus your life perspective?
